BETTER! vs Cloudinary
Humans set the strategy. Agents do the work. Cloudinary is a superb delivery machine — it transforms and serves media at the edge better than almost anyone. But delivery is not understanding. Its DAM sits on top of a pipeline, its AI arrives as per-feature add-ons, and the bill scales with usage credits. BETTER! was built agentic from the first commit: agents that describe and enrich every asset on arrival, a library you run by talking to it, and a native MCP server your own agents can drive. You define the taxonomy, the brand voice, the naming and approval rules; agents apply them at scale. Intelligence isn't a feature here. It's the foundation.
The Problem
Cloudinary earned its reputation honestly: on-the-fly transformation, edge delivery, and developer tooling that makes shipping media into apps and websites genuinely pleasant. If your problem is "serve this image at nine sizes to three continents," Cloudinary is a great answer. But that's a pipeline problem. Most teams also have a library problem — thousands of assets nobody can find, metadata nobody wrote, footage nobody can search inside — and a pipeline doesn't solve it.
On the library side, Cloudinary's DAM is a layer on the delivery platform. Intelligence arrives as per-feature add-ons — tagging here, moderation there — rather than as an operator that runs the catalog. Someone still has to do the librarian's job, and at most companies that someone is a person with a queue.
Then there's the meter. Usage-based pricing — transformations, bandwidth, storage credits — maps neatly to delivery workloads and product traffic. But for a growing archive, it means the bill grows with the library, and every experiment with your own media has a marginal cost. A library you hesitate to use is a library that slowly dies.
The Answer
Feature Comparison
| Feature | Cloudinary | BETTER! |
|---|---|---|
| Agentic Foundation | ||
| Core identity | Delivery pipeline with DAM layered on | Agent-operated library from the first commit |
| AI approach | Per-feature add-ons | Agents run the catalog end to end |
| Autonomous ingestion | Add-on tagging, humans organize | Agents describe & enrich every asset on arrival |
| Conversational control | Console and code | Run the library in plain language |
| Agent-ready API / MCP | Excellent delivery APIs & SDKs | Native MCP server + agent-ready API |
| Library oversight | Manual spot checks | Oversight agent audits integrity nightly |
| AI & Intelligence | ||
| AI provider | Vendor-selected add-ons | 300+ models, one key (Claude, GPT, Gemini, local) |
| Auto-enrichment | Tags via add-ons | Titles, keywords, descriptions written for you |
| Metadata provenance | Not tracked per value | Every value carries provenance; human edits protected |
| Video understanding | Transcodes and streams beautifully | Understands it scene by scene + transcribes |
| Search | ||
| Search approach | Structured fields + tags | Semantic — find by meaning, sub-50ms |
| Search inside video | Find the file, then scrub | Word-level transcript search — jump to the moment |
| Delivery & Transformation | ||
| Edge delivery / CDN | Best-in-class, its home turf | Serve via your own infra or CDN |
| On-the-fly transformation | Industry-leading URL-based transforms | Core derivatives and conversions shipped |
| Cost & Ownership | ||
| Pricing | Usage credits — grows with traffic and library | Flat license, published numbers |
| Self-hosted | Cloud-only | One command, or fully managed |
| Where AI runs | Vendor's cloud | Your choice — cloud or fully offline |
| Own your data | Export on exit | Own your data and intelligence layer |
| Proven scale | Massive delivery volumes | Built for 50-million-asset libraries |
Green = shipped today. Yellow = partial or add-on. Red = missing or weak. Gray = different job.
The honest version: Cloudinary is the best delivery pipeline in the business, and if your problem is serving media at scale, use it — seriously. BETTER! is an agentic library where the intelligence does the cataloging before you ask. Moving assets and understanding them are not the same job — and the two compose well over APIs.
Honest Take
Cloudinary genuinely works as media infrastructure for developers. But if your problem is the library — assets that catalog themselves on arrival, a collection you manage by talking to it, search that finds by meaning, footage you can search inside — that's a different kind of product. There is a BETTER! option.
