BETTER! vs ResourceSpace
ResourceSpace was the right answer in 2008. It is 2026. The PHP/MySQL/jQuery stack was never designed for AI-native asset management, and the roadmap tells the story. BETTER! was built from scratch for the world that exists today.
The Problem
ResourceSpace is built on PHP, MySQL, and jQuery. That stack made perfect sense when it was designed. It does not make sense as the foundation for AI-native asset management. The architecture was never intended to orchestrate vision models, process video scene analysis, or run semantic vector search.
Their 11.0 roadmap (scheduled June 2026) is focused on modernization: removing jQuery, adding Composer, PHP 8.5 compliance, and moving to Lucide icons. S3 storage is in "Scoping" and a local LLM to replace the OpenAI-only plugin is "Waiting for go-ahead." The team is actively working on infrastructure catch-up, but these are foundational changes that BETTER! shipped from day one.
AI integration today is through an OpenAI-only plugin with no model choice and no local AI option. An OpenAI token usage cap is in progress (ETA March 23). If you want to use Claude, Gemini, or run Ollama on your own hardware, that is not available today. A "Local LLM to replace OpenAI GPT" item exists on their roadmap but is waiting for approval.

Dan Huby, CTO of ResourceSpace, has stated that ResourceSpace was the first DAM to integrate an LLM. We respect that claim and the work behind it. Our comparison is about where both products stand today.
Honest Take
ResourceSpace is a solid open source DAM for teams with PHP skills and simple needs. If you have outgrown MySQL FULLTEXT search, need AI beyond a single OpenAI plugin, or cannot wait for S3 and local AI to move off the roadmap and into the product, there is a BETTER! option.
